During the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment in June 1992 on the
island of Santa Maria, Azores, the NASA Ames radiation group deployed a set of
instruments to measure clear and cloudy-sky radiation. Measurements consisted
of: solar hemispheric total and diffuse irradiance, direct solar irradiance,
near-infrared narrow-field-of-view spectral transmission, and infrared
narrow-field-of-view radiance. We derive stratocumulus optical depth, aerosol
(clear sky) optical thickness, and cloud and clear sky brightness temperatures.
Using simultaneous measurements from identical radiometers on the NASA ER-2 and
NCAR Electra aircraft, comparisons are made with model results.
