December 1999

December 18, 1999 - December 22, 1999

The Terra spacecraft was launched from Vandenburg Air Force Base at about 1:57 EST. The CERES instruments remained in survival mode until switched to normal operational power on Decmber 21 and December 22, 1999.

From launch until instruments began operating on normal power, operations were monitored at the Terra EOC [EOS Operations Center] via a few selected telemetry points. Reports from the EOC indicated that all instrument telemetry values remained within acceptable limits. The Main and MAM Covers remained closed until 25 February, 2000.

CERES instruments were switched to normal operational power at the following times.

   FM-1 - DOY=355/December 21, 1999 @23:54:34 UT
   FM-2 - DOY=356/December 22, 1999 @00:00:27 UT

After being switched to normal power, the instruments were transitioned to the Safe mode and normal housekeeping data began flowing to EOC during real-time contacts. Larry Brumfield, CERES Operations Manager, reported that all housekeeping measurements were within acceptable limits.

Also upon normal power application, both instruments began generating science data, but on-orbit communications problems prevented the data from being transmitted to EDOS in the normal manner. Level-0 data for the entire day of December 22 were eventually received at and processed by the LaRC DAAC.

December 23, 1999 - January 10, 2000

The instruments operated in Safe mode during this period. Beginning on January 3, selected TODL [Time-Ordered DownLink] files of CERES instrument data were generated by EOC personnel for review by CERES personnel at LaRC. A review of engineering and science data from these data sets indicated normal performance and operation of the instruments.

February 3, 2000

FM-1:   The azimuth drive output indicated a stall due to a large shift in the azimuth angle when the azimuth brake was applied during execution of Safe mode sequence. Azimuth position data indicated an unrealistic change from about 194 degs to around 1 degree. Analysis indicated that the data word containing azimuth position counts may have dropped the most significant byte.

The spacecraft was on an ascending node, in a spacecraft Sunset event, at following Earth location:

     South latitude = 63 degs
     East longitude = 43 degs

The brake application and anomaly occurence concided with a planned Solar Calibration event.
The predicted Sun position, relative to the instrument, at this time was:

Sun azimuth angle = 294 degs
Sun elevation angle = -11 degs

FM-2:   The instrument continued to operate normally.

February 4, 2000

FM-1:   Science and housekeeping data were accessed and are being analyzed for clues to azimuth drive anomaly.

FM-2:   The instrument continued to operate normally.

February 8, 2000

FM-1:   Commanding scheduled for tommorrow [Feb 9] to test azimuth drive operation.

FM-2:   The instrument operated normally.

February 9, 2000

FM-1:   Testing began to recover operations from azimuth stall anomaly.

FM-2:   The instrument was operated in Alongtrack mode 12 hours, crosstrack mode 12 hours.

February 10, 2000

FM-1:   The data from February 9 tests were reviewed before continuing with recovery tests.

FM-2:   The instrument operated normally.

February 11, 2000

FM-1:   The second phase of recovery tests was performed.

FM-2:   The instrument operated normally.

February 12, 2000

FM-1:   The data were reviewed before returning to normal operation.

February 13, 2000

FM-1:   The instrument will return to normal operation tomorrow, February 14.

February 14, 2000

FM-1:   The instrument returned to normal operation.

FM-2:   The instrument operated in cross track mode for 12 hours, biaxial restricted mode 12 hours. This was the first time the instrument has operated in restricted biaxial mode since launch.

The instrument performed a series of 5 CAM sequence tests to simulate a Deep Space Calibration Maneuver (DSC).

Summary of FM-1 and FM-2 Operations:

FM-1:   The instrument operated in the either cross-track scan mode or biaxial scan mode on a given day during most of the month; however on a number of the days in which the TRMM/Terra intercalibrations were performed, the scan modes for the day were a combination of cross-track, biaxial and FAPS modes. These days are denoted with a *X in the scan mode column.

April 2000

Summary of FM-1 and FM-2 Operations:

On April 30 2000, the CERES instruments on the Terra spacecraft completed their first calendar month of normal post-checkout science operation.

Both instruments performed solar and internal calibrations every 14 days, on April 5 and 19, and both instruments were commanded to operate in contamination safe mode during periods when spacecraft maneuvers were being performed. No significant instrument problems were reported during the month.

FM-1:   The instrument operated normally in the restricted biaxial scan mode, but normal operation was modified as follows:

The instrument operated in the along-track mode every 14 days, on April 12 and 26.

FM-2:   The instrument operated normally in the cross-track scan mode.

June 2000

Summary of FM-1 and FM-2 Operations:

FM-1:   The instrument operated almost continously in the cross-track scan mode for the month of June.

FM-2:   The instrument operated primarily in the restricted biaxial scan mode.Exceptions to this operational schedule are given below.
Operated in the along-track scan mode on [June 7 and 21]
Because values of the beta angle were less than 20 degrees, Sun-avoidance commanding was required at Sunrise and Sunset during along-track operation.

Operated in the cross-track scan mode on [June 14]

Sunrise Calibrations for June 15, 2000

FM-1:   Five solar calibrations were performed at Sunrise. They were performed to check out prelaunch predictions that the MISR instrument would block the field of view of the FM-1 instrument during Sunrise solar calibrations at or near the minimum solar beta angle. The second and fourth calibrations were performed with the spacecraft yawed about 10 degrees and the instrument azimuth angle reduced from the predicted solar azimuth angle by about the same angle. The spacecraft was yawed and stablized in attitude before the calibrations were initated, and then yawed back to the nominal attitude after completion of the calibrations. The three other calibrations were performed with the spacecraft at its nominal attitude.

Analysis of the solar calibration data indicate that all calibrations of the FM-1 instrument were successful, and no significant differences were observed in any of the calibration data. Conclusion: no blockage by MISR instrument. This result suggests that the spacecraft need not be yawed during future solar calibrations at any value of solar beta angle. However, the question remains about whether some important factors may have been overlooked, either in the prelaunch predictions or in the tests themselves.

FM-2:   Five solar calibrations were performed at Sunrise in parallel with solar calibrations of the FM-1 instrument.

No significant differences were seen in the FM-2 calibration data acquired during any of the five calibrations.

   FM-2 21:22:30 21:37:30

FM-2:   The instrument operated primarily in along-track mode.

Software patches

FM-1 and FM-2:   The instruments implemented the following two software patches for several periods on June 23 and 24. These patches were used to execute a long dwell internal calibration scan profile. This profile was executed while the blackbody and swics were turn on to the medium and level 2 settings, respectively. Objective was to evaluate 2nd time constant responses.

TRMM/Terra Intercalibrations

FM-2:   The instrument operated at selected azimuth angles for 20-minute periods which began at the times listed below. The purpose of this special operation was to align the elevation scan plane of the instrument with that of the PFM instrument - near the times when the Terra and TRMM orbits cross. Both spacecraft were on descending nodes between Sunrise and Sunset.

Note that the [TRMM] PFM instrument experienced a major anomaly on June 14, 2000 and has not produced valid science data since.

December 2000

Summary of FM-1 and FM-2 Operations:

Internal calibrations of both instruments were performed on December 6, 13, and 27, and with the FM-1 instrument, only, on December 20.
Solar calibrations were performed on December 13 and 27.

FM-1:   The instrument operated almost continously in the cross-track scan mode during December.

FM-2:   The instrument operated in the biaxial scan mode all but three days in December. Azimuth rotation was restricted from December 1 to December 16 because the beta angle was less than 20 degrees.
Operated in the along-track mode on [December 5 and 19]
Operated in the cross-track mode on [December 26]

FM-2:   Normal operations were interrupted on December 12, 19, and 20 to align the azimuth gimbal to make measurements of the moon. After the moon measurements on December 20, - at about 01:36:00 UT - the FM-2 instrument was commanded to the safe mode by the solar presence sensors. For more details on the moon measurements and why the instrument was commanded to safe mode, see the expanded comments for December 12, 19, and 20.

Dec 12, 2000

FM-2:   The instrument was configured via stored commands to make moon measurements during several moonrises and moonsets between 19:00 UT and 23:40 UT. The configuration commands rotated the azimuth gimbal to the predicted azimuth angle of the moon and implemented a special elevation scan profile. The detectors did not make good-quality moon measurements because the instrument azimuth gimbal was set to an angle slightly offset from that of the moon.

Dec 16, 2000

FM-2:   The instrument switched to biaxial normal Earth scan profile at about 12:51 UT - Beta angle became greater than 20 degrees.

Dec 19, 2000

FM-2:   The instrument was configured to make moon measurements during a moonrise and moonset - beginning at about 00:33 UT. The detectors scanned the moon and made good-quality measurements during this exercise.

Dec 20, 2000

FM-2:   The instrument was configured to make moon measurements during a moonrise and moonset - beginning at about 00:17 UT.

The moon measurements were of fairly good-quality during all moonrises and moonsets. However, when stored commands were sent to switch the FM-2 instrument back to the biaxial scan mode - after the moon measurements - the instrument did not respond as expected. The flight software set the lower azimuth angle to a value less than 90 degrees - causing the detectors to scan near the plane of the Sun. The solar presence sensors detected the Sun and commanded the instrument to the safe mode.
