Drawing of CERES Instrument This drawing shows the location of the CERES instrument on the TRMM satellite. CERES and the Lightning Imaging Sensor are two Earth Observation System instruments which were added to the primary TRMM payload to complement the goals of the mission.

Drawing showing the CERES instrument scan Earth

This drawing illustrates the CERES Earth scan pattern. As the satellite moves through its orbit, the detectors scan from one side of the ground track to the other, making measurements of energy from the Earth's atmosphere.

Image of the CERES Instrument

This picture shows the CERES instrument before it was installed on the TRMM satellite. The white fabric protects the instrument from atomic oxygen in the upper parts of our atmosphere. Three detectors rotate within the semi-circular housing to make Earth energy measurements.

Earth-facing side of TRMM Spacecraft mostly taken up by the receiver for the Precipitation Radar (PR). The Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS), CERES, and Earth Sensor (ES) are at the bottom of the photo; the Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS) at the top.

Space-facing side of TRMM Spacecraft Antennae for Communication with Earth stations and TDRSS dominate this view of the spacecraft. Undeployed solar panels are visible on either side.

Side view of TRMM spacecraft. The left side shows the large precipitation radar instrument, with LIS, CERES and ES scanners clearly seen at the bottom. The right side is again an undeployed solar panel.
