Fire in the savanna grasslands of Kruger National Park, South Africa, during
the international Southern African Fire-Atmosphere Research Initiative
(SAFARI) Experiment, September 1992. The NASA Langley Research Center
Biomass Burning Research Team participated in the SAFARI experiment and
obtained measurements of the gaseous and particulate emissions from burning.
Due to extensive and frequent burning of the savanna grass, Africa is the "fire
center" of the world (Photograph by J. S. Levine, NASA)
