Introduction

In line with NASA's Educational Outreach goals, the Stratospheric Aerosoland Gas Experiment III (SAGE III), managed by the NASA Langley ResearchCenter, has initiated an educational outreach program to promote excellence in science and technology education at the K-12 grade levels. One of the program's main objectives is to engage students in meaningful learning activities based on exciting real-world science being conducted by NASA.The program focuses primarily on introducing students to science and technology topics related to the SAGE III experiment, and emphasizes hands-on activities. It is geared toward helping teachers integrate these topics and activities into their lesson plans. SAGE III offers a wide range of interesting science topics relevant to the Earth's atmosphere and the global climate system. For example, SAGE III measures several species in the atmosphere (aerosols, clouds, ozone and other trace gases) that may influence global climate and high altitude ozone depletion. By sharing the excitement of SAGE III research, and demonstrating its benefits to society, we hope to raise the level of interest and appreciation for science among young students. Involving students in these and similar outreach activities will increase scientific literacy, help achieve Standards-of-Learning goals, and in some cases, influence career choices.
