National Geography Standards addressed by SAGE III SOLAR
Standard Number Standard Application in SOLAR
1 Use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. Use maps and globes to locate satellite orbits. Use maps and globes to determine latitude and longitude. Use computer technologies and web-based tools to investigate environmental issues relevant to geographical locations; and, to communicate findings from data collection.
3 Analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth’s surface. State latitude and longitude of data-collection sites and other points of interest. Describe weather patterns and atmospheric conditions of selected locations.
4 Understand the physical and human characteristics of places Analyze the relationship between physical characteristics and atmospheric conditions for a geographic region.
8 Understand the characteristics and spatial distribution of ecosystems on Earth’s surface Describe the effects of human activities (such as biomass burning) on ecosystems.
14 Understand how human actions modify the physical environment. Describe the effects of human activities on the amount of aerosols over a particular landmass or body of water. Measure the amount of haze over a particular geographical location.
15 Understand how physical systems affect human systems Describe the effects of excess aerosols on human health and comfort.
16 Understand the changes that occur in the meaning, use, distribution, and importance of resources. Describe how the use of certain resources affects the atmosphere.
17 Apply geography to interpret the past Describe the need for environmental policies enacted for particular geographical areas and for the global community.
18 Apply geography to interpret the present and plan for the future. Measure the amount of haze in the atmosphere over a particular geographical location, then compare this data to that of other locations. Investigate the nature and importance of environmental studies and policies by geographical region.
Note:The National Geography Standards used in the above matrix were developed by the National Council for geographic Education (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) in conjunction with the American Geographical Society, the Association of American Geographers, and the National Geographic Society.
