Se refiere a los cumulonimbos; son nubes que se extienden desde niveles próximos al suelo hasta alturas que sobrepasan los 600 metros o más. Suelen denominarse cumulonimbos incus o yunque, por la forma de cuña en la parte superior. Están formadas por gotas en su parte inferior y por cristales de hielo en las zonas más altas. Son las nubes de tormenta y pueden producir rayos, chaparrones, fuertes lluvias y en algunas regiones, granizos.
