S'COOL E-note for September, 2006

Greetings and welcome to the 7th monthly email of news from S'COOL.

THIS MONTH'S NOTES INCLUDE:

1) Satellite correspondence email notification system is now live!
2) Does S'COOL fit your state education standards?
3) Earth Science Week, Oct. 8-14, 2006: "BE A CITIZEN SCIENTIST!"
4) Cloud Photo of the Month - what we are seeking
5) S'COOL Visits - Are we coming to a town near you?
6) Writing opportunity

(1) Satellite correspondence email notification system is now live!
As of this week, the new automatic email that notifies you when satellite data corresponding to your ground observation has been processed is now working. We have gotten lots of notices in the first couple of days (remember, these come in about a week after the observation date), and have already gotten some good ideas for improving the system. If you get one of these emails, please let us know if you have any comments. And if you don't get one of these emails but think you should, please let us know that as well. We have already fixed a few kinks in the system, but there may be more. We look forward to more scientific interaction with our participants thanks to this new feature of S'COOL.

(2) Does S'COOL fit your state education standards?
As mentioned in last month's Enote, we would really like to identify state (or country) education standards that align to S'COOL. When you get to that part of your curriculum, please remember to send us a quick note. Thanks! Please send:
- which state! Or which country, if this question applies.
- state standard number/letter/or other identifier
- brief description of the standard
- if applicable, what specific part of the S'COOL experience meets that standard
Your assistance with this project will be most appreciated!

(3) Earth Science Week, Oct. 8-14, 2006: "BE A CITIZEN SCIENTIST!"
It's coming up very soon. S'COOL observations during this week are a good way to participate. You may also want to take a look at the Science Project ideas posted on our sister site, MY NASA DATA.

(4) Cloud Photo of the Month - what we are seeking
This is the regular reminder. We want your photo, with your explanation of why it merits the distinction of 'S'COOL Cloud Photo of the Month'. We are trying to get a wide variety of cloud-related photos into this collection, so take a look at the previous selection and send us something interesting and different.

(5) S'COOL Visits - Are we coming to a town near you?
Take a look at our Visits page now and again (you can get to it by clicking the yellow school bus on the main page). We've just updated it with quite a few events this fall. We'd love to meet with you if we are in your area. Also, if there is a regional or state meeting we aren't attending, we would welcome your assistance as a S'COOL ambassador to present on our behalf. We can provide S'COOL materials to share if you give us a little advance warning.

(6) Writing opportunity
Are you a middle school teacher using S'COOL in connection with Math? The focus issue of "Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School" for 2008 will be devoted to "Developing Mathematical Understanding through Representations". Manuscripts are due February 15, 2007. If you have an idea for an article related to S'COOL, we can work with you to write something. If you know of other places that might welcome a S'COOL-related article, we'd be happy to work with you on that also.

As always, keep looking at the sky!
