S'COOL E-note for November, 2006
Greetings from the S'COOL Team! Welcome to Issue #9 of the S'COOL E-note.
This month's E-note includes:
- Will there be a change in the rules for Daylight Saving Time in your country or state?
- Link to MODIS satellite image on the comparison page
- Work continues on the table of "Education Standards Related to S'COOL"
- S'COOL Monthly Top 10 Observers
- Will there be a change in the rules for Daylight Saving Time in your country or state?
Since 1966, most of the United States has observed Daylight Saving Time from 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of April to 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday of October. Beginning in 2007, most of the U.S. will begin Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and revert to standard time on the first Sunday in November. For S'COOL participants outside the United States, will the beginning and ending dates change for your country or state? The S'COOL team needs to know this information ahead of time so that we will be ready! The on-line Report Form and other information related to observations will be updated as necessary. For more information about the history of DST, along with the announced changes click here.
- Link to MODIS satellite image on the comparison page
The ground to satellite comparison page, linked from your satellite matches e-mail notification, has a new feature! Have you noticed the MODIS image? This direct link allows your students to use the MODIS satellite image as an additional basis for comment on the ground to satellite comparison. MODIS (or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is a key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites.
NOTE: We know that it can be hard to find your location in these images. We are currently working with the MODIS team to add more useful goegraphic information to them.
- Work continues on the table of "Education Standards Related to S'COOL"
Please continue to send us a note about your state's education standards that relate to S'COOL. Are you observing clouds or using S'COOL materials to teach your current curriculum? Just send us a note as you go along, and we will add it to your state's list on the "Education Standards Related to S'COOL" table. So far we have PA, VA, WV, MN, and DOD schools. Your assistance with this project is much appreciated!
- S'COOL Monthly Top 10 Observers
Congratulations to schools who made the monthly Top 10 Observers list! Did you know the Top 10 Observers and First Time Observers are recognized each month? For observations to be counted toward the Top 10 list, participants have until the tenth of the following month to submit observations. The Top 10 Observers and First Time Observers lists will be updated a few days after that cut-off date. For example, participants who want their observations counted toward November Top 10 Observers honors will have until December 10 to submit observations. The Top 10 and First Time lists will be posted a few days later.
