S'COOL E-note for February, 2007
Greetings from the S'COOL Team! Welcome to Issue #12 of the S'COOL E-note.
This month's E-note includes:
- Reporting problems with the S'COOL website
- S'COOL website "Feature of the Month"
- Daylight Saving Time reminder for US and Canada
- Contest opportunity (outside of NASA)
- MY NASA DATA workshop 2007
- Reporting problems with the S'COOL website.
Have you noticed any problems with the S'COOL website? An example would be clicking on a button to find that "nothing happens". Please e-mail us at scool@lists.nasa.gov to report any problems. If you have noticed a problem, more than likely it is affecting others. From our point of view, we don't always see website problems unless our participants let us know. Thanks for your help with reporting anything unusual!
- S'COOL website "Feature of the Month"
You, as our S'COOL observers, are very important people! You provide ground truth measurements to assist in the validation of the CERES instrument. Do you know what the CERES instrument measures? Do you know how many CERES instruments have been launched? Find the answers to these questions, along with plenty of interesting information about CERES by visiting the "What is CERES?" link under the "Find Out More: WWWWWH" cloud on the S'COOL website.
- Daylight Saving Time reminder for US and Canada
Daylight Saving Time (DST) will begin on March 11 in the US and Canada. Remember to request overpass schedules for standard time through March 10 and a separate schedule for DST beginning with March 11. The "Daylight Saving Time in Effect for Period Selected" box is only used during DST. Need help with DST? Send an email to S'COOL.
- Contest opportunity (outside of NASA)
Participate in the 2006-2007 CAPCO Science Class Challenge and win $250 to $5,000 for your school and a pizza party for your class! For grades 4-9, the competition is meant to encourage students and teachers to learn about the Earth's protective upper ozone layer, CFCs, and the environment by using provided activities or their own creative methods. The contest is open to teachers with classes in grades 4-9. Teachers must be employed by a public or private school, or be a home school educator. Deadline: May 14, 2007.
- MY NASA DATA Summer Workshop 2007
Plans for our third MY NASA DATA Summer Workshop continue! Please share the announcement included below (and on the MY NASA DATA website) with your grade 6-12 colleagues, especially with those who would want to learn how to use data sets in their classroom instruction.NASA Langley Research Center will host a hands-on workshop designed for the Grade 6-12 Educator. The workshop will focus on the implementation and use of Earth System Science data sets developed for the pre-college education community as part of the MY NASA DATA program. A major component of the workshop will be the development of lessons incorporating one or more data sets. The data sets are derived from the archive of remotely sensed data retrieved from NASA's Earth Observing System satellites. Participating teachers will explore topics in Earth system science (especially atmospheric science), educational application of data sets, and hands-on classroom activities. Participants will experience meaningful field trips and benefit from the expertise of nationally recognized atmospheric researchers. Participants will also explore how data sets can be used to enhance their curriculum and how students can utilize these data for inquiry-based learning and research. Participant feedback and curricular contributions will be enlisted as further development of data sets continues. Earth Science educators are particularly encouraged to apply. MY NASA DATA Summer Workshop 2007
Goals: Participants in the MY NASA DATA teacher workshop will:
- access microsets of Earth system science data
- access and explore model lessons which utilize microsets of data
- participate in interactive seminars and tours led by scientists discussing selected methods of data collection and analysis
- develop, individually or as a group, at least one new lesson incorporating data sets
Key Outcomes: During the school year following participation in the MY NASA DATA teacher workshop, teachers will:
- use the MY NASA DATA website and Live Access Server to access microsets of Earth system science data
- implement lessons or other teaching strategies which incorporate microsets of Earth system science data
Important Dates:Application must be postmarked by April 30, 2007
Notification of acceptance will be sent by e-mail on or before May 18, 2007
Workshop dates will be July 29-August 3, 2007Contact Information:
