SSF Snow Identification Parameters

Cloud-mask snow/ice percent coverage (SSF-69) :

This parameter is PSF-weighted percent of snow/ice within the CERES FOV (see CERES SSF Collection Guide, p. 51).

Surface type index (SSF-25) :

This is a list of the 8 most prominent surface types within the CERES FOV, which are ordered on area coverage with the largest being first (see CERES SSF Collection Guide, p. 25).

Snow/Ice percent coverage clear-sky overhead-sun vis albedo (SSF-30) :

• Indicates whether or not the CERES FOV centroid falls within the region near coastline where the microwave imager cannot distinguish between land/snow and water/ice.
• Also provides the overhead sun clear-sky visible albedo from history maps generated by the CERES cloud group.

    FORMAT:   XYYY  , where

    X = 0 : CERES FOV centroid is in region (away from a coastline) where microwave imager retrievals are available..
    X = 1 : CERES FOV centroid is in region (near a coastline) where microwave imager retrievals are unavailable.

    YYY = 0 - 100% or 999 (default)

X is determined by reading 10-minute map that provides a flag to indicate where the microwave imager does not provide a retrieval due to proximity to the coastline.

YYY is the overhead sun clear-sky visible albedo from history maps generated by the CERES cloud group. Default value is 999. To use this new parameter:

        icoast = int(XYYY/1000)
        iadmgeo = XYYY - icoast*1000
