Wind Fields ... Severe Storm Dynamics

GIFTS will enable the inference of hourly interval winds. Such inferences are extremely important for analyzing the dynamics of severe weather systems, particularly the development and movement of intense weather systems, such as thunderstorms and hurricanes. Space demonstration of this proposed concept will enable an assessment of the potential operational benefit of the GIFTS type observations on future operational geostationary weather satellites. In fact, NOAA is committed to evaluate the GIFTS temperature, moisture, and tracer wind profile products for their potential operational benefits.
